I greeted MSG Rubins when he and his family arrived to ft Drum the first time. They were in military guest housing and I took Lady, his German Shepard to a mobile home i was renting to stay until he bought a home by the river. I cannot say enough good things about him. Great friend and leader. I remember his hardy laugh and firm hand on my shoulder asking me how I was doing. I also remember the day after he and two co workers, Hennessey and Yetter got fines for fishing without a license. He was laughing and angry at the same time.
I got out of the army and came back in a year later. A few years later he was my Brigade sergeant major and truly the best. He was always looking out for people and certainly me.
Shame that he and his family lived so close to me and I didn't look him up. To his wonderful family, my deepest sympathy. Know that he made a difference in many lives.

Dear Roberta & Family: I am so very sorry and saddened to hear the passing of Chuck. He was such a great guy and a wonderful friend to my late husband, Mike. I will always have fond memories living across the street from you for all of those years and will always smile everytime I think of Chuck's laughter when I yelled out, "didn't you hear my whistle!?" Please know that all of you are in my thoughts and in my prayers.

We would stand by the mailbox and talk. Two old men, each with their stories. Chuck spent time in the military, all over the world. I remember when he recounted his time in service - and how he so deeply loved and honored Roberta for how she cared for the family when duty called him elsewhere. He was so proud of his kids, and grandkids. I remember when Chuck talked about work - and how irritated he was when he thought some of his commanders in the military misused their command or how other mechanics would cheat their customers. Chuck had this unpretentious integrity that seems so rare in these times. I remember that he had a kind of boyish smile when he laughed. I remember that he enriched the lives of many, many others - in his family, his community and our country. And when I pass his mailbox, I'll remember that knowing Chuck enriched my life. My greatest sympathy to all who knew and loved him.
